Zirconia Ceramic Crowns

Zirconia ceramic crowns are teeth prosthesis prepared with the zirconia element that is a metal known with its white color. It is preferred over traditional full metal or metal-based porcelain applications in teeth that need to increase the durability feature at a high rate. In this way, it allows aesthetically successful dental prostheses to be made.

What are advantages of zirconia ceramic crowns?

  • Its polished and smooth surfaces are effective in preventing plaque accumulation and discoloration problems caused by products such as tea, coffee and cigarettes.
  • Because of its special structural advantage, zirconium can repair micro cracks formed on it, so it can maintain its durability feature for a very long time.
  • The application of zirconium dental prosthesis with a single layer, called monolithic zirconium, requires very minimal abrasion on the teeth. In this way, it provides a great advantage in protecting healthy dental tissues.
  • There is no metal that can cause allergic reactions in the structure of zirconium ceramic coating prostheses and the person does not have any health problems. Thanks to this feature, it can be used safely in individuals with metal allergies where conventional substructure prostheses cannot be applied.
  • Thanks to its white color tone, the artificial, dull and lifeless appearance caused by the metals used in traditional substructure prostheses is not encountered in these prostheses.

In which cases the zirconia ceramic crown can be preferred?

Zirconium ceramic coating applications can be preferred in any treatment that requires veneer or bridge prosthesis. The applications that are frequently preferred due to their advantageous aspects can be listed as follows:

  • It can be applied to support the remaining healthy tissues by repairing advanced decayed or broken teeth where the durability is lost at a high rate.
  • It can be preferred when restoration of teeth in the posterior region, which is frequently exposed to chewing forces, is required.
  • It allows dental prosthesis to be made in cases where the forces on the teeth are not balanced due to parafunctional habits, crooked tooth alignment, hereditary disorders of jaw relations.
  • It can be planned in order to close the observed gaps in cases where the tooth alignment is intermittent.
  • It can provide restoration and treatment of large cavities caused by tooth loss.
  • It can be preferred for masking advanced color changes that can be observed due to endodontic treatments known as root canal treatment.
  • It is effective in replacing the lost tissues of teeth with advanced wear due to various external factors and increasing their durability.
  • It can be applied in order to regulate the advanced discoloration of the teeth due to excessive consumption of foods that have a coloring effect. It is preferred in cases where the tooth cannot be whitened at the desired rate with whitening applications and the color tone of alternative prosthesis applications cannot be masked.
  • It helps to apply effective treatment when a high-strength prosthesis is needed in people with metal allergy.
  • In cases where orthodontic treatment is not preferred, it can provide regulation of certain level of crowding.
  • It can be planned when a prosthesis with high aesthetic success is desired on the implant.

How the zirconia ceramic crown application is performed?

During the first examination session, teeth, gums, jaw relationships and all tissues interacting with structures are examined in detail. In addition, the person’s treatment needs are determined and the patient’s expectations are evaluated together. After all the evaluations, the detailed treatment plan is created by the joint decision of the physician and the patient. Depending on the treatment plan, a restoration design is made and the general lines of the prosthesis desired to be obtained are determined. The primary parameters that are effective in the creation of this design can be listed as the face shape of the person, character features, the condition of the teeth, the aspect ratio of the gums, the smile profile, the eye line and the lip line. After all the evaluations, the person’s oral and dental health is protected at the maximum level and the design is detailed in accordance with the aesthetic expectation. It is possible to evaluate the position of the design in the mouth by rehearsing before the treatment, in case the current positions of the teeth do not prevent the application.

When transitioning to the treatment session, first of all, local anesthesia is applied to the area to be treated, and thus the treatment process is carried out in a painless and comfortable way. Then, some abrasion is done on the teeth in order to prepare the area where the zirconium ceramic coating will be placed. The new form of the teeth is measured and recorded, and the permanent prosthesis is produced by adapting the prepared design. Temporary prostheses are placed on the treated teeth in order to ensure that the process between the treatment session and the production of the prosthesis is comfortable and there is no aesthetic loss. When permanent dentures are prepared, their compatibility with the teeth is checked, and in case of complete compatibility of the dental tissue with the prosthesis, the dentures are fixed to the relevant teeth with permanent bonding.
